Gansu Province Traditional Cane form

About ten years ago, a visitor from China joined my Tai Chi class in Redding to watch and participate. We quickly became friends, and after my class she invited me to meet her teacher if I ever traveled to China. As luck would have it, my girlfriend and I were planning a trip to China that summer, and our itinerary included her city. That visit marked the beginning of a wonderful friendship between Helena (her English name), her instructor Master Wang, and me. Over the years, we’ve met several times and maintained a strong connection.

Recently, Helena sent me a video of a martial arts form using a cane (or staff) that she had learned. She explained that it’s a traditional martial art originating from Gansu province, where she lives. I was truly impressed by her skill and precision in performing the form. She mentioned that it took her two months to learn, noting that it was easier to pick up compared to Tai Chi, which she has been practicing for over a decade.

Check out the video below and let me know your thoughts in the comments!

Hi Miguel! Thank you for sending The Stick Dance. Please send the following comment:

“In itself it looks very dynamic and harmonious. It is a beautiful spectacle. However, I do not think it has the enormous beauty, tranquility and harmony that characterizes Taichi and its therapeutic properties.Taichi, unlike that Dance with a stick, is an exercise that tends to oxygenate the internal organs, the visceral myofascias. Called by some Metarobic (beyond, or different from Aerobic or Anaerobic exercises)The Dance with a stick seems to be a more aerobic exercise that requires oxygenation of the muscles more than the organs and internal myofascia. In certain passages it reminds me of certain dances that I saw in Haiti when I lived there for a few years. If I continued to choose, I would opt for one of the classic Taichi Chuan or some Qigong like Mawangdui, Dawu, The 8 Trigrams, some subset of the Game of the 5 animals.Thank you very much for sharing.Juan Carlos Cernuda, from Argentina”

Amazing that she could learn this in 2 months. She has great form and precision, as you said. I am drawn to this fast form since it suits my ” border collie” mind. But I agree with Juan Carlos from Argentina. Diana in Moscow, Idaho.
